Greenhouse Pulley Systems for Cable and Curtain Management

Every commercial greenhouse uses ropes and cables for something: raising and lowering sidewall film, operating shade curtains, adjusting insect screens, and managing overhead wiring for irrigation and electrical systems. The component that makes all of this manageable is the pulley. A well-designed pulley system reduces the force needed to lift and tension heavy curtains, keeps ropes aligned and off the crop, and prevents rope wear against structural members that would otherwise cut or fray the line. In our years of supplying greenhouse hardware, we have seen more operational problems caused by poor pulley selection and installation than by any other single hardware category. This guide explains the different pulley types, their applications, and how to get the most from your system.
The Role of Pulley Systems in Greenhouse Operations
A greenhouse pulley does two things: it changes the direction of a rope or cable, and it reduces the friction that would otherwise make pulling heavy loads difficult. Without pulleys, a shade curtain that weighs 50 kg would require 50 kg of pulling force to raise. With a simple pulley system — one pulley at the attachment point and the rope routed back to an operator position — that same 50 kg can be raised with a fraction of the force. More complex curtain systems use multiple pulleys in a block-and-tackle configuration that multiplies mechanical advantage further. In addition to load management, pulleys keep ropes running in straight lines along the greenhouse, prevent ropes from rubbing against film or crop, and allow a single operator to manage multiple curtain sections from one position.
Single Pulley vs. Double Pulley: Application Guide
Single pulleys — such as our JC-20, JC-21, and JC-22 models — have one wheel and one rope groove. They are used wherever a rope needs to change direction by 90 degrees or 180 degrees with minimal load. A typical application is at the top corner of a sidewall where the curtain rope runs horizontally along the gutter and needs to be redirected down to the roll-up bar. Single pulleys are also used at guide points along long curtain runs where the rope might otherwise sag or rub against structural members. Double pulleys (JC-23) have two wheels side by side on the same axle and are used where two ropes must be routed from the same point — for example, where one rope raises a curtain from each end toward the center, or where a curtain rope and an insect screen rope share the same anchor point. Double pulleys keep the two ropes parallel and prevent tangling at the junction.
Small Pulleys, Aluminum Pulleys, and Openable Pulleys
Small pulleys (JC-31, JC-41, and similar) are used for light-duty applications: guiding ropes in tight spaces, running ropes along the inside of the greenhouse where a full-size pulley would be too bulky, or managing the small ropes used in irrigation line support and sensor cable routing. The smaller wheel diameter reduces the mechanical advantage compared to a standard pulley, so small pulleys are only suitable for light loads of up to a few kilograms. Aluminum pulleys (such as our aluminum double wheel JC-38) offer a significant weight advantage over steel pulleys — important in overhead curtain systems where every kilogram of hardware adds to the load the curtain structure must support. Openable pulleys (JC-125) have a hinged side plate that snaps open, allowing the rope to be threaded into the groove without threading the rope through the entire system. They are essential for retrofit installations where the rope is already in place and cannot be disconnected to thread it through a standard closed pulley.
Sizing Pulleys for Your Cable Diameter and Load
A pulley must be sized for both the rope diameter and the maximum load it will carry. The groove of the pulley wheel must match the rope diameter closely: a rope that sits too loosely in the groove will jump out under load, while a rope that is too thick for the groove will bind and increase friction dramatically. Standard greenhouse rope diameters range from 3 mm to 8 mm, and our pulley range covers all of these sizes. For load capacity, check the safe working load (SWL) rating of the pulley — our standard single and double pulleys are rated from 50 kg to 200 kg SWL depending on the model. Always apply a safety factor of at least 3:1 — if your curtain weighs 60 kg, use a pulley rated for at least 180 kg SWL to account for dynamic loads when the curtain is raised or lowered quickly.
Curtain Line Clamps, Sliding Cards, and Completing the System
Pulleys alone do not make a curtain system — they are part of a complete hardware chain that includes curtain line clamps, sliding cards, and rope anchoring points. Curtain line clamps (JC-121) grip the curtain edge and attach it to the operating rope, providing a secure connection point that distributes the curtain load evenly along the rope. Sliding cards (JC-123) are small plastic or nylon devices that attach to the curtain and slide along a guide wire or rail, keeping the curtain edge straight and preventing it from sagging or billowing in wind. Both components work together with the pulley system to create a curtain that operates smoothly, stays taut, and does not damage the film when it is raised or lowered. When specifying a curtain system, treat these components as essential, not optional — skipping the sliding cards and guide wires is the most common cause of curtain operational problems we see in the field.
Installation and Maintenance Tips for Greenhouse Pulleys
Install pulleys with their axle perpendicular to the direction of rope travel — a pulley that is mounted at an angle will cause the rope to run against one side of the groove and wear unevenly. The pulley must be positioned so the rope enters and exits the groove in the same plane; a misalignment of more than a few degrees will cause the rope to walk out of the groove under load. On steel pulleys, check the bearing seals periodically and re-grease annually to prevent corrosion of the axle and wheel bore. On aluminum pulleys, inspect the axle bolt and locking mechanism for any signs of loosening — vibration from curtain operation can gradually loosen fasteners on aluminum hardware. Replace any pulley with a worn groove, a damaged bearing, or visible deformation of the wheel body; a failing pulley will cause rope wear and eventual rope failure, which can drop a heavy curtain unexpectedly.
